Sri Lanka's coastline offers a distinctive diving adventure, where historic shipwrecks lie beneath the waves alongside coral reefs and thriving marine life. Our Southwest Liveaboard brings these underwater landscapes together, inviting divers to explore a lesser-known side of the Indian Ocean. Shipwrecks are at the heart of the experience. From vessels that have become part of Sri Lanka's maritime history to wrecks now encrusted with coral and inhabited by schools of fish, these submerged relics offer a fascinating blend of exploration, history and marine discovery. Each site has its own character, from the structure of the wreck itself to the life that has made it home. Beyond the wrecks, the itinerary explores sandstone and limestone reefs shaped by the coastal environment, including the influence of freshwater flowing into the sea from Sri Lanka's many rivers. These sites offer a different perspective on the region's underwater biodiversity, with opportunities to encounter colourful reef life, schools of fish and larger marine species. The journey also reveals the character of Sri Lanka's southern coast. Mirissa, a major fishing port, reflects the island's enduring connection with the sea, while Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa are known for their palm-fringed beaches, coastal culture and coral reefs. For divers drawn to maritime history, the atmosphere of a submerged wreck and the thrill of exploring beyond the familiar, the Southwest Liveaboard offers a compelling reason to discover Sri Lanka underwater where every wreck has a story, and some are still waiting to be told.
